Description

Toddlers and preschoolers were introduced to Keith Haring by reading the book Pop Warhol's Top by Julie Appel and Amy Guglielmo and looking at photos of Keith Haring and his artworks. Afterwards, the children used various materials to make their own musical mixed media collages.

Objective

To have the children to work on their eye-hand coordination skills and to introduce Keith Haring to the two age groups.

Resources

The book: Pop Warhol's Top by Julie Appel and Amy Guglielmo and photos of Keith Haring and his artworks.

Materials

Keith Haring - like cut-outs
Markers
Glitter (for only the preschoolers)
Star stickers
Dot Art makers
Glue and paint brushes
Construction paper
Foam paper cut-outs
Wooden shape pieces
Chalk

Procedure

The children began their collages by drawing with chalk and markers on construction paper to have a graffiti-like background. Afterwards, Keith Haring -like cut-outs were handed to the children to decorate with dot art markers and glitter ( the preschool students used the glitter). The cut-outs were then glued onto the graffiti backgrounds. Extra strips of construction paper were used to add a 3-dimensional look and feel to their collages. This was done by folding, balling up and crinkling the strips of paper. This step was also used to encourage the toddlers to work on their fine motor skills. Star stickers, wooden shape pieces and foam paper cut-outs were used to make musical instruments and boom boxes.
