"I went to Pedano’s shop and drew directly on large sheets of wood.
They then cut out the shapes and secured them in bases. I used a tool I had
bought with me from New York and carved my drawings into the wood. These
drawings, as always, are done directly without any pre-drawings or plans.
One of the things I am continually interested in is the amount of different
ways of making marks and the varieties of experience to produce the same
consistent line (i.e., carving, painting, drawing). Each requires different
amounts of time, concentration, and effort, but the result remains amazingly
