Artist Sketchbooks

Below is a selection from one of Keith Haring’s early sketchbooks, created while he was a student at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, from 1978-1980. This selection shows notes on art history and other artists, proposals for a video project, and ideas for future paintings and sculptures. During his career, many people who witnessed Keith Haring at work noted how his process did not rely at all on preliminary sketches. These early sketches and writings speak to the artist’s development as he was still forging his distinctive style. More selections from other sketchbooks will be added periodically – so check back soon!
